At Hard Target International, our philosophy is simple, and was articulated best by grandmaster Fujita Seiko:
“The best way to survive a fight is to not be in one in the first place”
Most personal protection training available today focuses on one of two things:
While we at Hard Target certainly encourage people to develop fighting skills-both armed and unarmed-there are multiple weaknesses to basing your personal security on this approach:
First, these skills are perishable; in other words, if you do not continue to practice them regularly, you will not be able to access them during a violent encounter. Most people take a self-defense course and then never practice those drills again, and over time those skills are lost.
Second, even if you do continue to practice and maintain your skills, you are still at a distinct disadvantage. Remember, in a violent encounter you are probably facing a person who does this regularly, and is skilled at the art of ambush. Both criminals and terrorists use speed and surprise to overwhelm opponents and gain victory. Even experienced fighters are often overwhelmed in such situations.
Third, if you are facing multiple attackers or you are in a foreign country (for example, one where you are not allowed to carry a firearm), this training will be largely useless.
We at Hard Target International take a different approach. A bodyguard’s job is NOT to beat up and shoot “bad guys” (although movies would tell you otherwise). A bodyguard’s job is simple:
THAT is what we will teach you in our personal protection training: how to plan ahead, recognized threats, determine risk levels, and then develop strategies to avoid those risks, using all of the same tools and techniques professional bodyguards use. WE WILL TEACH YOU TO BE YOUR OWN BODYGUARD.
